Japanese traditional crafts:Koshu Inden【PR】

Koshu Inden is a leather craft made in Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture. A distinctive feature of Koshu Inden is the use of deerskin and the use of lacquer to add patterns. A variety of products such as bags, wallets, and accessory cases are made using this technique.
It was also used for weapons during the Sengoku period. The leather is soft and light, and the longer it is used, the more lustrous it becomes, and the use of lacquer makes it durable and long-lasting.

Koshu Inden has a long history, and there are records that indicate the production area as early as the Edo period.
The history of leather crafts can be traced back to the Nara period, when the method of tanning leather and painting patterns with lacquer was introduced from abroad. The origin of the name Inden is thought to be that when foreigners came to Japan from 1624 to 1643, they presented Indian leather products to the shogunate. There are various theories, including whether it became Indo from India or because it was introduced to India.
Currently, only Koshu Inden in Yamanashi Prefecture is manufactured.

One of the charms of Koshu Inden is the beauty of its patterns. Small cherry blossoms, irises, dragonflies, etc. are often depicted, and the high level of design that colors the beauty of nature and the four seasons is another reason for its popularity. It is the only leather craft in Japan that takes advantage of the skill of skilled craftsmen and smokes it with straw smoke and pine resin to give it a unique color. Also, the technique of coloring while changing the pattern for each color is very colorful.
